Christina Reese reminds us:

  1. Do NOT confuse heated bucket with a bucket de-icer, which was done because the word “CAGE” was used. Buckets don’t have cages, but de-icers or heaters do. It is the bucket heaters or de-icers that HAVE caused numerous fires.
  2. In 20 plus years using 6-10 heated buckets a year, no problems.
  3. Feed horses senior feed soaked in hot water and you will notice that horses need less to drink because you provided them with 3-5 gallons of water with the senior feed. I’ve been doing it for over 15 years and see the same effect in all of the horses (probably 20 different horses).

1/27/12 HONEYWELL PORTABLE ELECTRIC HEATER RECALL: BURN HAZARD
The Honeywell Surround Select Portable electric heater has been removed from stores because, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the heater’s internal housing, which includes the fan, heating element and circuitry, is able to detach, which can expose consumers to a burn hazard. The heaters were distributed by Kaz USA Inc. under license from Honeywell. The heaters were sold at Best Buy, Meijer and Wal-Mart stores nationwide for between $50 and $70 from July 2011 through December 2011. Consumers with questions can contact Kaz by calling (800) 370-8137 or by visitng the website at www.kaz.com/recall .

10/18/08 A way to avoid the use of heat tapes! I received an email from Dr. V. Shurin, president of Colorado Advanced Technology (www.ion-plasma.com) about the Freeze-Free Water Hose (FFWH) developed by his company.

"Speaking about water hoses at subfreezing temperatures, our company has developed and patented the Freeze-Free Water Hose. A small air compressor, which is a part of the whole assembly, removes water from a hose and a faucet in just about 30-40 seconds, depending on the length of the hose. So, while installed, you don't have to disassemble the hose at subfreezing temperatures. The systems works very reliably in Colorado, where we live. The price shown on our website for the Freeze-Free Water Hose is incorrect; it is $300 for the whole new assembly."

2/15/06 West Barnstable, MA Barn Fire Photos
Britton Crosby has posted some photos of a barn fire in West Barnstable, Massachusetts that occurred on May 11, 2002. In this case, fortunately, no horses were lost, but the sight of total destruction is still heartbreaking.
